Today I’m speaking with Dr James Mannion – a teacher trainer, keynote speaker and author with a passion for educational and political reform.
James is the Director of Rethinking Education, a teacher development organisation specialising in implementation science, self-regulated learning and practitioner inquiry. He was a science teacher for 12 years, and holds an MA in person-centred education from the University of Sussex and a PhD in self-regulated learning from the University of Cambridge.
This is actually James’s third time on the ERRR podcast – and we go way back. We even did a road trip together a few years ago, to visit the incredible XP School in the north of England.
James is the co-author of Fear is the Mind Killer: Why Learning to Learn Deserves Lesson Time – And How to Make it Work For Your Pupils. This was the focus of James’s last appearance on the ERRR, alongside his co-author Kate McAllister.
Building on this work, James is currently working on a national initiative with the Welsh Government to support young people in becoming more effective learners.
Earlier this year, James published Making Change Stick – a practical, research-informed book that brings big ideas and fresh thinking to the complex world of school improvement. This book the culmination of around ten years’ R&D, and it’s the focus of today’s conversation.
He is the chair of the Education Policy Alliance, a grass roots think tank dedicated to crowd-sourcing ideas for education policy. And he is the founder and co-host of the Rethinking Education podcast, which has had over half a million downloads to date.
