In this episode, we’re speaking with Craig Barton.
Craig is a bit of a legend in education, and particularly in the maths education world. He loves teaching, doing, speaking, and thinking about mathematics. He taught maths in secondary schools for 15 years, was TES maths advisor for 10 years, and he is now the chief academic officer at EEDI. Craig is the author of many best-selling books, including How I Wish I’d Taught Maths, Reflect, Expect, Check, Explain, and Tips for Teachers guides to…, a series we’re talking about today. Craig hosts the popular Mr. Barton Maths podcast and the Tips for Teachers podcast.
He’s been hugely influential in the UK, Australia, and globally in helping tens of thousands of teachers to build a better understanding of what makes great teaching. In this episode, Craig and I dive into two key areas. The first is his new Tips for Teachers guide to … series. This fantastic series of 16 books covers the following crucial teaching techniques, approaches, and theories: cold call, mini whiteboards, call and respond, turn and talk, check for listening, check for understanding, responsive teaching, diagnostic questions, the do now, atomization, the I do, the we do, independent practice, purposeful practice, and problem solving, low stakes quizzes, and observing lessons and coaching.
