In this episode, we’re speaking with Dr. Brian Poncy. Brian is a Professor of School Psychology at Oklahoma State University. His research focuses on academic interventions and behavioral principles of learning, specifically in mathematics. Brian co-created Facts of Fire, a set of free materials to support teachers in the assessment and implementation of daily maths fact practice to increase their numeracy and computation skills (www.factsonfire.com). He is an author of countless academic papers on academic interventions and mathematics fluency, and is also co-author of the book Effective Math Interventions: A Guide to Improving Whole-Number Knowledge.

In sum, Brian is one of the foremost international experts on the development of fluency of number facts, which is why I was so keen to have him on the podcast.

In this episode, we speak in detail about two of Brian Key’s key papers, outlining the foundational principles at the heart of them and what this means for teachers as they try to scaffold improved fluency in mathematics.
