The video below demonstrates how to complete the following workflow:
- Watch a Netflix show in a foreign language that you’re learning (your target language)
- Extract the subtitles directly from Netflix
- Turn portions of the subtitles into flashcards in Anki, complete with auto-generated audio.
This is an incredibly powerful learning workflow that I’m loving at present. The main benefits I’m finding are: 1. I can learn a language whilst relaxing and watching Netflix with my partner, 2. The vocab and sentences that I learn are embedded in a memorable and emotive story, 3. I know I’ll remember the words for the long term, because I’m using spaced repetition!
Here are the tools and some useful links to help you to implement this yourself:
- Here’s how to extract the subtitles from Netflix as written instructions, thanks to Sam Smart for writing these ones. (Developer tools is option + command. + j. The thing to search under ‘networks’ is ‘?o=’)
- Anki is Anki
- The tool that auto-generates audio for me, and auto-translates within Anki, is Language Tools. Creator Luc is also very helpful via email with any Qs or similar.
With this tech combo, the world is your oyster!
Enjoy.
