This is one of seven chapters on online learning that together make up Episode 40 of the Education Research Reading room. Read/hear an introduction, and see an overview of all seven chapters here.

Sally Richmond is originally from the UK but has been teaching overseas for 20 years.  She has worked at Beijing City International School for the past 9 years and this is her second year as the Elementary School Principal.  Sall is currently in Phuket where she arrived 9 weeks ago for the 7 day Chinese New Year holiday – leading online learning from a villa with her family, four other teachers and a doctor.

Yooah  Nguyen is a Third Culture Kid from Canada, Korea and the US, working as Deputy Principal of the Elementary school at BCIS. This is her 12th year at BCIS and second year in her current role. She is currently in Vietnam figuring out this whole online learning business, with her husband and daughters for the last 9 weeks as they wait out the best time to head home to Beijing.

This chapter is absolutely essential listening for anyone who is in a position in which they need to quickly and effectively shift their primary or elementary school, or any school really, to online learning

Nuggets of wisdom
  • Stay connected with your community – face to face conversations are so important in helping people to feel a bit of normality in very exceptional circumstances.
  • Be open and transparent with all community members – for example, if you are trying something new and you are not sure how it is going to work, tell them this and learn to laugh at yourself when you make mistakes!
  • Be flexible and open-minded in these exceptional times.
  • Always assume positive intent!
